My products are professional grade and should not turn you blotchy. If that happens it is normally a result of not following proper pre tan instructions and post tan care. Please take a few minutes and read through ALL the common questions and answers on my site for the best instructions and tips to help you achieve the best results.
If you are hormonal or on medications that can alter the results of the self tanner as well causing blotchy or unevenness.
Many people have unfortunately turned that dreaded orange from a professional spray tan or from another self tanning product in the past so I get where you are coming from. However the orange color is usually a result of the following:
- A salon using a product too strong for your skin tone
- The tech having a heavy hand and applying too much product on your skin.
- You had picked a self tanning product too strong for your skin tone ( Just because you want extra dark does not mean your skin can take it).
- The product has a low quality form of dha.
- You had a heavy hand and applied too much product to your skin causing it to over process.
My products should not turn you orange unless you pick a color too dark for you or apply with a heavy hand. My dha is of the best and purest quality.
If you have fair skin that has trouble tanning in the sun or new to self tanning I strongly recommend the following options:
- Start with just 1 coat of the regular tanning mousse ( You can always reapply 2 coats the next time)
- Use just the gradual tanner to build a more natural color over a few days
- Try the rapid mousse but start off with 1 coat and rinse in 1 hour ( You can always increase rinse off time in stages to “test the envelope” )

There will come a time when your beautiful tan has faded and you need to remove it to prep your skin for the next application.
Soaking in a hot tub will remove the self tanner. If you do not have access to one please read this blog on removal tips:
Pools and saltwater can cause the tan to fade or become patchy. So prolonged water activities can effect the sunless tan. If you have water activities planned I suggest you purchase the gradual tanner. This can be used as a tan extender. You can apply before bedtime to add color back into the skin and help prevent the fading process
Do NOT use any bar soaps prior to applying the self tanner and afterwards. Especially Dove soap, This is the worst thing to use and will cause your tan to fade and become patchy.
Do not use any exfoliating soaps, just use a gentle body gel made for spray tanning or free of SLS and alcohols,
To maintain freshness & longevity of the product I recommend that you store it in an area of 75 degrees or cooler. Excessive and prolonged heat will cause the active ingredient to spoil. If you live in a hot area I recommend storing it in the fridge. Many people keep in the bathroom and that can get warm and cause it to spoil quickly.
Do not panic. This is why proper preparation is important. If you have deodorant on it can react with the sunless tanner and cause the armpits to look green. Also if your skin has any sweat or residue that will turn those areas green as well when it comes in contact with the sunless tanner. This just temporary and will rinse off when you take a shower. If the self tanner was spoiled or old it would cause your entire body to turn be green as it could not pick and choose what areas to discolor, so please keep that in mind.
Store in a cool area to avoid the self tanner from spoiling.
Yes you can. You can also rinse it out in the sink as well and let it air dry.
This product is not meant to be left on for more than 4 hours ( and that is for dark skin tones) Use 2 coats on the body ( but one on the hands and feet) For best coverage it is recommended that you apply it with the applicator mitt.
If you are very pale and normally can not achieve a tan in the sun it is HIGHLY recommended that you start conservative and the first time rinse off in 1 hour ( you can always go longer next time) to avoid any orange/unnatural color.
When you rinse off it should be with water only ( no soaps or body washes & refrain from using a loofah or washcloth) Do not use any perfumes or lotions until the next day.
Rinse off times are as follows:
1 Hour- light
3 hours- medium dark
4 hours- dark
Again- if you leave this product on for more than 4 hours or sleep in it you can turn orange or unnatural with fairer skin tones!
**PLEASE NOTE**- With the rapid product you will not see full color immediately after rinsing off as it still takes 8-10 hours for the color to fully process. If you rinse off and it looks like you do not have any color do not panic. The tan will start to develop as time goes on. Color will continue to process over a 24 hour period so it is common in some cases to look a little darker on day 2.
Moisturize 2x a day (starting the next day) to prolong and hydrate the tan.
If you are using the rapid tanning mousse please read the full directions. Note that the tan will not be fully developed after rinsing off and still takes 8-10 hours to develop ( It may even look like you have no color after rinsing but it will continue to process)
When you first shower you will see color washing off. Don’t be alarmed as that is only the cosmetic bronzer from the application and your developed tan is not washing off.
Do not wash your hands or get them wet for at least 8 hours after application. ( Or until you rinse off with the rapid tanning product) Use rubber gloves if you have to use the sink for anything.
Wear loose fitting dark clothing after application. Avoid socks & boots until the tan fully develops (I recommend flip flops or sandals with an open toe) it washes off most fabrics but can temporally stain some clothes. Do not wear wool, silk or nylon immediately after as it can stain those materials. Avoid wearing anything red as that color can react with the tan and turn the tan green !
Avoid the rain until after you shower. Water can ruin or hinder the development of a sunless tan so make sure you have an umbrella and watch for puddles if you need to go out. Do not let pets lick your sunless tan.
Wait at least 24 hours to shave as shaving can cause fading. Try to shave only as needed & use a sharp new razor & hair conditioner instead of shaving cream.
Do not do any spa treatments for a few days after your tan (pedicures, waxing, massages) as these treatments can fade or remove the tan.
Avoid any waxing, baby oil, mineral oil or massage oil
Using any anti aging or acne products will cause the tan to fade.
Yes, but I do it at least 24 hours before your apply the self-tanning mousse. If any sooner the wax or cream will provide a barrier against the skin preventing it from being absorbed. Do not shower or bathe for at least 8-10 hours after application. If you do not wait the recommended time it can prevent your tan from fully developing. The longer you can wait the better. I recommend waiting 10-12 hours for optimum results
It will last anywhere from 5-9 days depending on how diligent you follow post tan instructions and moisturizing. Remember a fake tan is on the outer layer of the skin, so anything you do to cause exfoliation will cause the tan to fade quicker.
It is imperative that you moisturize at least 2x a day and avoid the following:
Hot baths, pools, hot tubs, commercial bar soaps (like Dove) , exfoliating body washes, baby oil moisturizers & loofahs. I highly recommend using my body lotions as they are free of parabens and drying alcohols. It can help extend your airbrush tan for up to 2 weeks in some cases.
Absolutely! Just start off with a light application. But please be aware that the product does not contain sunscreen and you can burn over a self tanner
YES!! There is no SPF protection from a spray tan and these products do not contain sunscreen. You will not be protected against UV rays and will still burn. If you peel the sunless tan will peel off as well.
Moisturizing is a crucial part post tan. If you do not use a quality moisturizer that is alcohol and sls free your tan can fade in patches and start to look blotchy.
With the regular self tanner do not moisturize until AFTER you take your first shower. With the rapid tan wait until the next day. After that in order to get best results and longevity you must moisturize at least 2x per day. The DHA in the tanning lotion reacts to the outer layers of the skin. The more you moisturize will delay natural exfoliation which will prolong your tan. If you don’t, your skin will get dry and your tan will fade quickly & fade poorly.
Drugstore moisturizers are not the best products to use and highly recommend for optimal results you use my best luxury body lotion or gradual tanner https://mwmelissaweinberg.com/shop/
I created these products specifically for sunless tanning and are used & recommended to by salons all over the country to their clients. They will hydrate your skin to the max and extend your tan because they are free of drying alcohols or SLS which can strip and fade a tan. You should be using the proper maintenance products to get your money’s worth and longevity out of the application.
Do not exercise or do anything that will make your sweat while the tan is developing. Refrain from ANY skin to skin contact until you have showered. If you do not follow this you will be preventing the tan from fully developing which can result in patches and streaking. After you have taken the shower and the tan has developed you can exercise.
Please keep in mind that this is a cosmetic. The more you sweat and workout can cause the tan to fade the tan quicker. The gradual tanner is an excellent product in that case to use with the mousse to help extend your color.
You will see instant color due to a cosmetic bronzer, however the actual tan will take from 8-12 hours to fully develop. With the regular self tanning mousse Do NOT shower or get wet until that time as you will risk washing off the self-tanner. With the rapid mousse you will rinse off between 1-4 hours for the darkness you are looking to achieve. (Do NOT leave the rapid mousse on for more than 4 hours or you can risk an unnatural color) When you finally shower you will see color washing off. Do not be alarmed as that is just the cosmetic bronzer that is washing off and you will have a beautiful tan underneath.
When you rinse do not use any loofas, washcloths, anything exfoliating or bar soaps containing Sodium Lauryl (Laureth) Sulfate (SLS) .When getting out of the shower BLOT your skin with a towel. Pat dry and DO NOT RUB!
When it comes to self-tanning remember the golden rule of less is more! You can always go back and reapply more if you are not dark enough after the first application. That is a much better result than over applying and turning an unnatural shade!
If you are extremely fair and cannot tan in the sun start off by applying just 1 coat of the mousse . If you are using the gradual tanning lotion start off applying it only once per day (before you go to sleep as you can not sweat or get wet )
Skin tones that are darker and that can tan nicely in the sun can apply 2 coats of the self-tanning mousse or if using the gradual tanner, can apply up to 2x a day. *Remember to err on the side of caution and start easy as you can always increase* Many times when a person looks orange it is the result of not the product but due to a heavy hand applying too much product * If you use the mousse and would like darker results after the first shower you can reapply an additional coat the next day.
If you are using the tanning mousse I highly recommend you apply this with a self-tanning mitt. This will ensure no mess to your hands and provide a flawless, streak free application. Pump product onto the mitt and them apply mousse in circular motion on clean skin. If you are using the gradual tanning lotion, apply like you would a regular body moisturizer in a circular motion. Make sure you wash or wipe down the palms of your hands to avoid staining and discoloration. Go lightly on the hands and feet with both products. These are the driest areas of the skin and tend to absorb more of the solution causing a darker more unnatural appearance. You can put a very light layer of moisturizer on those areas before to help with this issue.
You want to prepare the same way you would for a regular airbrush tanning session. It is imperative that you exfoliate your skin the day before or even for a few days leading up to the day you are going to apply the self-tanner. I recommend you use exfoliating gloves and refrain from a scrub that contains oils unless it is more than a day before your appointment. Any scrub is OK to use. Exfoliation is very important so the skin can be a clean even canvas. If self-tanner or gradual tanning lotion is applied on uneven skin, the older dead skin cells will come off first causing the tan to possibly fade poorly.
Do any waxing, pedicures or shaving at least 24 hours before. Do not apply any soaps (especially Dove) oils, lotions, perfumes or deodorant to the skin the day of the tan. These can create a barrier preventing the self-tanner from fully developing or resulting in patching or streaking.
** Do NOT shower and exfoliate right before application. Many beauty blogger sites advise to shower and exfoliate right before however this is poor information and doing so can result in a lighter tan and a patchy development. Also scrubs, exfoliants, soaps, hair conditioners, shampoo, shaving cream and other products leave an invisible film on the skin. This can effect the tan and result in a patchy or streaky application. If you absolutely must shower before your application is is NOT advised. But just do a quick rinse and refrain from using soap or body wash, but you will not achieve optimal results. .
